The results of the 2016 Election of Officers of the First National Guild have been certified to the Office and Professional Employees International Union. Twenty three nominees from 9 states were nominated by the membership for nine positions. After nominations closed, ballots and prepaid return envelops were distributed to the membership. The results are:

The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) continues to receive requests from podiatrists and staff alike to bring AAPPM events to the western parts of our country. In response, a 2016 Spring Seminar at the San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona located just outside Phoenix. The two-day seminar focused on coding and billing for the entire practice and sessions specifically geared for executive managers and medical assistants.

Over 100 doctors and assistants took part in the seminar, and 28 exhibitors were on hand. “I am happy to call this conference another great success,” explained AAPPM President and ABPM Diplomate, Ben Weaver, DPM. “Over half of the attendees were attending their first American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management conference.”

Dr. Ben Weaver has been an ABPM Diplomate since 2005.

New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society Meets with New Jersey Senate President

A delegation from the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society, including Drs. Jeffery Katz, President, Harvey Karpo, George Nassoor, Herman Hammerschmidt (Executive Director), and Ms. Laurie Clark, NJPMS Legislative Agent met on May 5th with NJ Senate President Stephen Sweeney in his office at the State House in Trenton.

This private meeting centered around current New Jersey healthcare issues and how they have affected both the patient and the practicing podiatric physician. Dr. Nassoor, the Guild representative, commented that this important face-to-face with the Senate President was a direct result of the assistance of the AFL-CIO Legislative staff and membership in the Guild. “We believe our issues and concerns… will be given serious consideration, with future meetings planned.”

Dr. Lynn LeBlanc and Other CT Podiatrists Volunteer to Help Hartford’s Homeless Population

More than 260 homeless children and adults in Hartford are now enjoying a rare comfort – high-quality, well-fitting shoes and new socks – after attending a foot screening clinic at Holy Trinity Church. The event was part of a new program, “Footwear with Care”, that is providing urgently needed shoes and foot care to Hartford’s homeless community.

The initiative is a partnership of the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association, Fleet Feet of West Hartford, the non-profit Community Partners in Action, and the Hartford Police Department. At a recent clinic, Dr. Lynn LeBlanc and other podiatrists affilated with St. Francis Medical Center examined the feet of Hartford’s most vulnerable population for hours, checking for critical foot issues and making sure that new shoes fit well.

ABPM Organized a Biomechanic Symposium for New York Podiatric Residents

Podiatric residents representing several New York area programs participated in an American Board of Podiatric Medicine organized seminar, workshop, and presentation at the Nassau Medical Center in East Meadow, NY on April 23, 2016.  ABPM President Dr. Steven Goldman, ABPM Past President Michael Dellacorte and Dr. Marc Benard, ABPM Executive Director, participated in the presentation.  Dr. Benard  covered the surgical and nonsurgical application of biomechanical principles in adult and pediatric patients, with topics that included pes cavus, pes planus, tendon transfer, equinus and orthotic prescription writing (assisted by Scott Marshall of KLM Orthotic Laboratory).  Dr. Benard also provided a workshop on the pediatric examination, utilizing several children provided by faculty member Dr. Robert Stabile.  Drs. DellaCorte and Goldman discussed board certification in today’s health care environment its importance to career development.  They also covered specifics related to the ABPM certification process.  The presentation was very well received by all in attendance.

Connecticut Magazine sent more than 5,000 questionnaires to Connecticut doctors, asking them to recommend a doctor (other than themselves) to whom they would send a loved one for expert medical care. The top vote-getters in the podiatry category were: Drs. Michael Z. Fein, Andrew Rice, and Abraham C. Yale.
