A student from Budd Lake was among five college students from northern New Jersey and Canada who participated this month in a highly selective summer medical internship led by Newton Medical Center podiatrist, Dr. Christian Robertozzi. The Newton Summer Internship Program is a two-week program developed to expose undergraduate college students to the healthcare field. It is designed to give students a close-up perspective of life as a physician in a wide range of specialties.

“The objective of the program is to give the students a taste of a day in the life of many different specialties in medicine. These first-hand experiences can help guide the expectations for their careers and their personal lives,” said Robertozzi, who is also the immediate past president of the medical staff at Newton Medical Center.

Christian Robertozzi, DPM, has been board certified with the ABPM since 1987.

Dr. Dan Evans (L) presenting ACFAOM Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Lawrence Harkless (R)

The Annual Clinical Conference of the American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine (ACFAOM) was held at the Westin Savannah Harbor last weekend. Highlights were interactive sessions on podiatry’s role in arthritis, a 3-hour debate on theories forming the basis of custom foot orthoses, the diabetic foot, trauma complications, atypical heel pain, preventing and surviving healthcare audits, and updates on billing and coding in 2016. Members who were not able to be present also “attended” via live streaming of several sessions over the Internet.

An emotional highlight was an extensive interview (chairside chat style) with Dr. Lawrence Harkless, Founding Dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences, by Dr. Daniel Evans, ACFAOM president. This interesting and revealing interview allowed everyone to learn about the exceptional human being behind the podiatric legend. At the conclusion of the interview, Dr. Evans presented Dr. Harkless with the College’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This award has only been given once before, to Dr. Barry H. Block.

Both Drs. Evans and Harkless are Diplomates of the ABPM. Dan Evans, DPM has been board certified since 1993 and Lawrence Harless DPM, since 1994.
